Level Up Your Basics, But Make it Grunge

When you think of clothing basics, you probably think of t-shirts, jeans, and neutrals. Grunge is no different. Like most styles, it’s built upon the basics. You’ve got to have great “boring” clothes to work with for those statement pieces to stand out!

One of the best things you can wear in the winter underneath an array of clothes is a turtleneck sweater. Particularly one that’s not too chunky! This is a great basic to have, because it means you can stay warm and ~cool~ at the same time. Add a band or graphic tee on top, a grunge staple, and you’ve created a whole new vibe!

Another basic item is this black jean skirt I’m wearing. I love the look of it, but it’s not giving me enough of a rebellious, messy feel on its own if you know what I mean. To up the anti, I added another classic grunge move: a tied flannel. This gives it the sort of rough but still cute vibe that I was going for!

You likely have basics sitting in your closet, so to grunge them up you just need a the occasional band tee and flannel. With that, you’re in the club! A combat boot or two doesn’t hurt, either.

The Fit

Black Turtleneck Cropped Sweater: This is what I’m wearing the most right now this winter. It’s such a necessity to have in order to incorporate tops and shirts that aren’t winter-weather approved. It’s a basic that you’ve got to add to your closet if you haven’t already. Check out the ones I’ve selected!

Blondie T-Shirt: I snagged this Blondie tee while rummaging through the t-shirt rack at Goodwill! It was such a good find. Worry not, you can snag your own Blondie t-shirt. I’ve got you covered.

Black Denim Skirt: This was also a great thrift store find! I wasn’t sure about it at first, but I’ve really come to love a denim skirt like this. Bonus points because it’s black! If you’re loving the look of this, you might consider shopping for one yourself. Here’s a few options!

Fleece Tights: If you want to wear skirts or dresses in the winter and not freeze, fleece tights are your best friend. These tights are such a life saver! I can’t recommend them enough. I got this pair from Amazon, but you can find others like them wherever you shop!

Black Chunky Oxfords: When I’m not in the mood to wear combat boots, but I’m still in the mood for a chunky shoe, these Oxfords are my go-to. It’s a little cuter than a combat boot, and you can play with your sock options a little more! While I got these from ASOS several years ago, there are lots of great options here.
