Soft grunge is a mix of the edgy and rebellious movement of the grunge aesthetic with the feminine and chic aspects of fashion. I love this sweet spot! It sort of blends the masculine and feminine together, which we all have inside us.
Playing with exactly how to make an outfit soft grunge, however, is the trick. Since soft grunge emerged as a Tumblr trend, you’ll often find cute tops and skirts mixed with combat boots or edgier jewelry. This is the key. Take something that’s ripped or faded or unconventional and pair it with something chic and feminine.
What does soft grunge look like today?
Really, soft grunge is your take on what edgy and feminine mean. For me, that’s often something edgy like my shoes or pants with a fitted top. Or that might mean a band t-shirt with a mini skirt and platform shoes. There’s no one formula, it’s all in how you choose to meld the two essences of the style together.
For a casual soft grunge look you can easily replicate, start with a pair of ripped jeans. This can be a little or a lot, whatever suits your fancy, along with an edgier shoe like these from Doc Martens. For the top, you might think about a cropped top such as this striped crop top from Zara underneath a fuzzy bomber jacket.
The soft and plush material of the bomber jacket counteracts the edginess of the pants and boots, giving it a casual feel that means business but still says you’re approachable. You can alter your hair and makeup to emphasize your soft grunge look, too, like I did with my soft makeup and casually girly updo.
