Do you find yourself drawn to statement tops and pieces, but find them just sitting in your closet? Clothes that make a statement are a lot of fun, but can get passed over in your day-to-day wardrobe!
In order to make a statement top or other article of clothing (accessories, too) work, you need to think about toning down the rest of your outfit. If you’re into the maximalist vibe, you might feel inclined to go statement on top of statement. And if that’s you, go for it! But for more of a soft grunge vibe and more of a casual situation, it’s going to be enough to stand out with your statement top.
When I wear something that I feel really packs a punch, like this satin floral button-down shirt, I like to tone down the rest of my outfit by wearing neutrals or monochromatic colors. Neutrals and monochromatic colors allow the main event to really shine and shift more into focus than it would if you wore multi-colored, or other “loud” pieces.
If I want to make it even more interesting, you could play with the way the statement top is presented, like I did here. It’s almost like I muted the statement top by adding a sheer lace long-sleeve top over the shirt. It’s coming through as the piece that draws your eye without it being overwhelming!

The (Statement) Pieces
Floral Satin Button-Down Shirt: This shirt caught my eye at the thrift store, and it was a match made in heaven in the dressing room! I love something that sticks out in a unique way, and I knew I had to style it as soon as I could! If you’re loving this look as much as I do and want to get your hands on a similar top, here are my favorites.
Sheer Black Lace Top: A sheer lace top will never steer you wrong, especially as a grunge babe! While most of the time I style other tops over this one, you can also style it over other shirts like this! It adds a fun new element and texture to an outfit. Shop similar options to the one I’m wearing here.
Black Acid Wash Ripped Jeans: These jeans aren’t just ripped a little, they’re the most grungy ripped jeans you ever did see. It’s a vibe I’m always here for! These are from Buckle several years ago, but if you’re looking for a similar pair, shop these jeans.
Brown Docs: Ever since I got these brown Doc Martens (hello black friday sale!) I truly cannot get enough of them. I’m obsessed, if you will! I love the platform, the zipper and lace combo, and the leather. And they’re brown! I think everyone needs a mixture of black and brown, at the very least, for the every day. If I’ve convinced you that you NEED these boots, head over here—I got you.
